Princess Turandot has sworn an oath that no man will possess her. However, she offers her suitors a chance: if one of them can answer correctly the three riddles that she asks him, he can marry her. If not, he must die. The story follows Prince Calaf’s obsessive quest to win the heart of the icy Princess Turandot, a woman whose cruelty masks a deeply troubled soul.
For nearly a century, Turandot has posed one final, unsolved riddle: its ending. Composer Giacomo Puccini died before he could complete it, leaving generations that had to be satisfied with various endings created by other composers.
Inspired by Bauhaus design and surreal geometry, Atlanta Opera's stage becomes a living, shifting world where every movement, every shape, and every moment reveals something new. It’s a visual experience as much as a musical one. And at the center of it all is a story built on riddles, power, and transformation. It dares to ask what drives a woman to destroy those who seek her love? This is not the traditional Turandot. In Atlanta Opera's reimagined Turandot, the princess is no longer a distant enigma, but a woman shaped by trauma, power, and defiance. Her story—long overshadowed—emerges with new urgency and emotional depth.
By reshaping the final act using Puccini’s own music, The Atlanta Opera presents a Turandot that has never been done before.
