From The 7 Fingers, the high-flying troupe behind the awe-inspiring stunts in the Alliance’s Broadway musical Water for Elephants, comes DUEL REALITY – an epic, cirque-infused performance inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Featuring their signature electrifying mix of circus, storytelling, music, and dance, this acrobatic tour-de-force for all ages has been described as “entirely entertaining and engaging” and “a spectacle that will truly astonish all who see it.”
Imagine a world where star-crossed lovers are circus stars, their love story unfolding through graceful and death-defying acrobatics. Two feuding families engage in a battle of skill, each competition more daring than the last—while a pair of star-crossed lovers struggles to escape the showdown. They are fierce players, but do they care who wins or loses if playing the game can bring them closer together? The reimagined tale of two rival houses dazzles the senses and stirs the heart.
EDITOR'S NOTE: I saw Duel Reality on Thursday night as a guest of the Alliance Theatre and it was fantastic! I especially loved the music in this stripped-down cirque production. Without creative sets or flashy costumes, the focus remained entirely on the spectacular strength and beauty of the athletes.
The talented cast delivered non-stop thrills, including double Chinese pole acrobats, fast-paced multi-ball juggling, and an amazing hula hoop act featuring at least 12 hoops at once! There was also a high-flying teeterboard competition, a unique triple diabolo performance, and a gorgeous trapeze duo. It was breathtaking to watch it all performed with no nets or mats.
The occasional "Shakespeare-ish" dialogue added to the drama of this contemporary retelling of the star-crossed lovers, though this version offered a much better ending! Although your whole family (ages 6 and up) would enjoy this show, I think Duel Reality would make an unforgettable night out with your teenagers or a great date-night.
