Atlanta Ballet is delighted to present the enchanting yet haunting masterwork, Giselle, on February 13-15 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. This beautifully tragic tale is brought to life by the artistry of dancers from Atlanta Ballet’s company and students from the Centre for Dance Education as well as the unforgettable score by Adolphe Adam, performed live by the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra. Giselle features choreography from Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin based on a revision of Marius Petipa after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot.
Step into the enchanting yet haunting realm of Giselle, where themes of love, loss, and redemption intertwine in a breathtaking narrative. Revered as one of most enduring romantic ballets of all time, Giselle centers on an adored young villager named Giselle, who falls in love with the noble Count Albrecht disguised as a villager. After learning Albrecht is engaged to another woman, Giselle dies of a broken heart and joins the Wilis, the regal, yet frightening spirits of scorned maidens. But even in the afterlife, the power of Giselle’s love prevails and saves Albrecht from tragedy.

Giselle was first performed in 1841 during the Romantic era of artistic expression, literacy and culture. The performance was one of the first full-length ballets to be performed on pointe and one of the first to have a female heroine. Giselle underscores self-expression and individualism in opposition to a world of rationalism.
“Giselle is a timeless romantic ballet, depicting human temptations overpowered by true eternal love and forgiveness,” said Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin. “We are excited to present the purity of classical traditions and elegance of movement enjoyed by global audiences for nearly two centuries.”
Atlanta Ballet’s unique rendition of Giselle will feature students from different levels of the Centre for Dance Education’s Academy, which is dedicated to nurturing young dancers in their artistic and educational journeys.
