Based on the bestselling 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, Ragtime: The Musical is set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York City, weaving together the stories of three distinctly American families, each in search of the American dream. Like the novel, the musical is historical fiction, with the story’s fictional characters interacting with real-life persons such as Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan, Emma Goldman and Booker T. Washington.
“Ragtime: The Musical is often called the last great musical of the 20th century,” said Natalie DeLancey, executive director of City Springs Theatre Company. “While the musical is decidedly contemporary, it’s very reflective of classic, grand, musical dramas like South Pacific and The Sound of Music. Not only is it the biggest show we’ve produced, but it’s a very delicate one that requires a great deal of respect and empathy from every artist involved.”
The Tony®-winning stage adaptation of Doctorow’s book was written by the accomplished playwright Terrence McNally, with music by the team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the composers of the hit musicals Seussical, Once On This Island
and Anastasia. The City Springs Theatre Company production will be directed and choreographed by New York-based Todd L. Underwood.
