The iconic Fox Theatre gears up to host the world-renowned musical, "Les Misérables," for a limited one-week engagement from June 4th to June 9th. This enchanting production, part of the Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2023/24 season, promises to bring Victor Hugo's epic tale of passion, sacrifice, and redemption vividly to life.
I saw this show when it was in Atlanta in 2012. The following is the review I wrote at that time:
Les Misérables is a feast for the eyes, the ears and the heart. It is the Broadway musical against which all others are judged. The music is loud and majestic. It washes over you in waves and sweeps you away with its grandeur. But there are also quiet, intimate songs that are haunting and beautiful and almost bring you to tears.
The spectacular scenery was the most impressive that I've seen in sheer size and believability. It takes you seamlessly from a ship's galley to the French countryside. Then on to Paris where you watch the mobs march through the streets to culminate in the battle on a barricaded street. The backdrops, which were inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, are gorgeous throughout and the light and sound effects are magnificent during the battle scene.
Although all of these elements coupled with the costumes and masterful actors are wonderful, it is the story that everyone loves. Yes, there's romance and yes there's even humor, but it is the story that resonates within the souls of us all. Its the story of the sacrificial love of a father for his daughter and what he is willing to do to protect his child against all odds. It's also the story of redeeming love and its power to transform a wretch into a man who is capable of not only forgiving, but also showing kindness to those who have wronged him.
If you were only going to see one Broadway musical in your whole life, this is the one I would recommend. If at all possible, don't miss it!
