The Atlanta Opera is thrilled to present Puccini's masterpiece, Madama Butterfly. It is an iconic tale of innocence lost is a timeless production of breathtaking beauty. A cast of leading, international singers will bring this haunting story of love, longing, and sacrifice to life on the stage.
Cultures collide with an American naval officer, stationed in Nagasaki, decides to take a Japanese wife. A delicate bride, Cio-Cio-San (the Japanese word for Butterfly), is fifteen years old and in love. She dreams of her new life with the handsome young officer. But he is marrying for convenience, and intends to leave her once he finds a proper American wife, since Japanese divorce laws are very lax. Renouncing her culture and her family to become a proper American wife, she settles into his home overlooking Nagasaki Harbor, and waits for his ship to return.
The production, created by Carl W. Knobloch, Jr., and General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun, has not been performed in Atlanta for almost a decade. “I look forward to bringing these incredibly talented singers to Atlanta,” Zvulun said. “We have delayed this production twice due to the pandemic. So much has changed in the world since we last presented Madama Butterfly and we are excited to recreate this beloved production through a fresh, new lens that features a real powerhouse cast.”
Kevin and Momo Suzuki, of the Japanese Folk Dance Institute in New York, will join the creative team to incorporate authentic movement. Presented in partnership with the Japan-American Society of Georgia, the Atlanta Opera will explore the problematic racial and gender stereotypes that are associated with the opera.
Featuring Yasko Sato as Cio-Cio-San and Gianluca Terranova as Pinkerton singing one of the most exquisitely beautiful works in the repertoire. Nina Yoshida Nelsen, Julius Ahn, and Allen Michael Jones also join the cast and The Atlanta Opera Orchestra, led by Timothy Myers. Tomer Zvulun directs.
