Smithsonian Magazine's 18th Annual FREE Museum Day

There may be no such thing as a free lunch, but there is a free museum ticket waiting for you! The 18th annual Museum Day is happening on Saturday, September 17, 2022. 

Hosted by Smithsonian Magazine, the annual event encourages museums, zoos, and cultural centers from all 50 states to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, which offer free admission every day.

Museum Day is a one-day event in which participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide FREE entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Participants are allowed to download one ticket per email address. The ticket provides FREE general admission on Saturday, September 17, 2022, for two people. Click HERE to get your ticket.

14 Georgia Museums are participating, including:

  • Barrington Hall (Roswell)
    In the 1830s, Barrington King, and his father, Roswell King, co-founded the colony which became Roswell. Be inspired by generations of the King family, who preserved Barrington Hall for more than 160 years. They come to life in furnishings, artifacts, and stories spanning from 1838 until the city of Roswell acquired the home in 2005. On the grounds, explore the only antebellum public garden in the greater Atlanta area, along with numerous original outbuildings.
  • Bulloch Hall (Roswell)
    Bulloch Hall was built in the Greek Revival style in 1839 by Major James Stephens Bulloch, one of Roswell's first settlers. It was here on December 22, 1853, the Bulloch's daughter, Mittie married Theodore Roosevelt Sr. The couple became the parents of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States.
  • Smith Plantation (Roswell)
    In 1838, the Smith family and 30 of their slaves left two struggling plantations along the Georgia coast to make a new start with 300 acres of cotton farmland north of the Roswell Square. Their home, built in 1845, was preserved by three generations of the Smith family and is now open to the public as a museum.
  • Davis Sencer CDC Museum (Atlanta)
    Ever wonder how CDC scientists merge old-fashioned detective work with high-tech science to crack the cases of mystery diseases? Get the story! Visit the David J. Sencer CDC Museum at CDC headquarters to see award-winning permanent and changing exhibitions focusing on public health topics and the history of CDC.
  • Marietta History Center (Marietta)
    This center preserves and displays artifacts relating to local businesses, military history and homelife from Marietta and Cobb County.
  • William Root House (Marietta)
    One of the oldest homes in the Atlanta area, the Root House is more typical of its time and place than the columned mansions popularized by Gone With the Wind.
  • Woodlands Gardenb (Decatur)
    Woodlands Garden is an eight-acre garden and native plant habitat near downtown Decatur. Explore the garden and an educational native plant garden which envelope visitors into the appealing, diverse plant world of the Georgia Piedmont.
  • Funk Heritage Center of Reinhardt University (Waleska- 13 miles N of Canton)
    See an award-winning film on the Southeastern Indians, visit the Hall of the Ancients where 12,000 years of Native American life is depicted through dioramas and artifacts and visit the art gallery featuring works by Native American artists and a one-of-a-kind gallery of historic hand tools. The museum was designated as “Georgia’s Official Frontier and Southeastern Indian Interpretive Center”.
  • Augusta Museum of History (Augusta)
    Augusta's oldest historical agency devoted to the preservation and presentation of local and regional history.
  • Columbus Collective Museums (Columbus)
    Experience 7 beautifully and colorfully displayed art and history collections:
    The Lunchbox Museum, The Royal Crown Cola Museum, The Chero Cola Museum, The Nehi Drink Museum, The Tom Huston Peanuts Museum, The Georgia Radio Museum & Hall of Fame and The Car Museum
  • Oak Hill & Martha Barry Museum (Rome)
    The Oak Hill home, built in the 1880s is the Greek Revival mansion of Martha Berry, founder of Berry College. Oak Hill was gifted by Martha Berry to the schools and remains intact as she left it in the 1930s. The Martha Berry Museum further tells the story of the Berry Schools.
  • Pebble Hill Plantation (Thomasville)
    Prepare to be amazed and captivated by Pebble Hill Plantation. The property was a shooting plantation for the Hanna family of Cleveland, Ohio in the later 1800’s.  The 40 plus room Main House is furnished with prime antiques, Audubon lithographs, and includes the Elisabeth Ireland Poe Sporting Art Gallery. The grounds are extensive and include a stable and cow barn complex, dog hospital, nurse’s station, family cemetery, and many other sites.
  • Lapham-Patterson House (Thomasville)
    This unique 1885 Victorian treasure was constructed in the Queen Anne style as the winter home of wealthy Chicago merchant Charles Lapham. Later, the home became the longtime residence of the Patterson family. The Lapham-Patterson House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.
  • Thomasville History Center  (Thomasville)
    Meet the county’s earliest settlers and builders, understand the impact of the Civil War, learn about West Point’s first African American graduate and his family, immerse yourself in the grand Victorian Resort Era, and explore the evolution of Thomas County’s expansive hunting plantations. Guests of all ages are invited to complete a scavenger hunt of artifacts found in and around the History Center!
