10 WAYS TO CELEBRATE MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND IN ATLANTA (MANY ARE FREE!)

It's Mother's Day Weekend, and whether you choose to enjoy some alone time, or spend it with the family, here's a list of area happenings (and discount offers too!).

2) Enjoy a FREE museum day with the family

  • The Second Sunday of each month is FREE admission day for the whole family at the High Museum of Art with special family-friendly programming. Info HERE
  • Take your Mummy to visit the mummies-  at the Michael C. Carlos Museum. See largest ancient collections in the Southeast, including artifacts and mummies from ancient Egypt, and artifacts and art from Greece, Rome, the Near East, and the ancient Americas. See our review.
  • This weekend Bank of America cardholders get FREE admission during the first full weekend of each month as part of Museums On Us. Participating museums in the Atlanta area include:
    Tellus Science Museum 
    Atlanta History Center 
    Center for Human and Civil Rights.

3) Does your Mom love music? 

  • The first FREE Summer Concert at Newtown Park is Friday from 6-9pm featuring Queen Nation, the #1 Queen Tribute Band in the nation.
  • If she loves Musical Theatre, then tickets to see The Color Purple by City Springs Theatre would be perfect! Get tickets HERE.

  • Get a FREE "Zoo Mom" Tour at the North Georgia Zoo in Cleveland. Take a tour and learn all about being a mom in the animal kingdom. How mom's take care of their young. Learn what it is like to be a surrogate mom to animals at the zoo and meet some of those special animal "moms". Talk with mom's who help at the zoo and share fun stories of being a mom to both the human and animal kind! Is it really that different after all? Moms get in FREE with paid child's admission on Mother's day!

6) Enjoy a FREE Festival-  There are several great festivals around town this weekend with FREE admission for the whole family including the 

7)  Visit Atlanta Botanical Gardens

  • Origami in the Garden, featuring 18 installations of nearly 70 museum-quality metal sculptures inspired by the Japanese art of folding paper that are the creations of Santa Fe artists Kevin and Jennifer Box. Throughout the Garden will be large-scale sculptures of flying birds, emerging butterflies, grazing deer, floating boats and more. The highlight of the show will be “Master Peace,” a 25-foot-tall sculpture of hundreds of stainless steel origami peace cranes towering over Howell Fountain.

9) Step back in time at the Georgia Renaissance Fest

  • Step inside a recreated 16th-Century European village. Music, comedy, and knights!  Info HERE.

10) If she loves horses, there are two great places to enjoy the Kentucky Derby on Saturday! 

  • Pull out your wide-brimmed hats and bow ties and head over to Parsons Alley for the  Duluth Kentucky Derby Viewing Party! Relax on lounge seating and enjoy everything from the pre-show activities to the big race on a large screen. 
  • Join us on the Town Green for the Peachtree Corners Derby and a Movie on the big screen!  Watch the race then stay for the funny, family movie, Racing Stripes (G), an American sports comedy family film that tells the story of Stripes, a circus plains zebra who is accidentally abandoned in Kentucky and raised on a farm next to a racing track. Believing he is a racehorse, Stripes dreams of training for and competing in the races. The film stars Hayden Panettiere, Bruce Greenwood, Wendie Malick and M. Emmet Walsh, with the vocal and voice talents of Frankie Muniz, Mandy Moore, Michael Clarke Duncan, Jeff Foxworthy, Joshua Jackson, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Rosenbaum, Steve Harvey, David Spade, Snoop Dogg, Fred Dalton Thompson, Dustin Hoffman and Whoopi Goldberg.
