CELEBRATE NATIONAL KAZOO WEEK & MAKE A DIY KAZOO

By Becky Samford, Publisher Duluth, Norcross, Suwanee, Johns Creek & Peachtree Corners Macaroni Kid January 24, 2022

Did you know that the kazoo was invented in Georgia! That's right, this humble little instrument that anyone can play and delights people around the world was invented right here in Macon, Georgia!

National Kazoo Day is traditionally celebrated on the 4th Thursday in January (or "whenever it's convenient for the kazooist"). This year, it falls on Thursday, January 27, but feel free to celebrate all week long!

Here is a fun video about the history of Kazoos:

Kazoobie Kazoos, America's Largest Manufacturer, sells nearly 1 million kazoos each year. Rick founded Kazoobie Kazoos in 1997 in Beaufort, SC. It is the only American manufacturer of high quality plastic kazoos. Rick's Kazoobie Kazoos are waterproof, child-safe, and extra loud which is why they are used by professional musicians around the world. Jamie Twarogowski, Macaroni Kid Lakewood/Littleton Publisher, chose to make a DIY Kazoo. Follow her instructions below and celebrate all week!!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Cardboard tubes (paper towels, t.p., we chose to use our leftover gift wrap tubes cut into smaller sections)
  • Craft tape such as Duck Tape
  • Parchment paper or waxed paper
  • Small rubber bands
  • Scissors

HOW TO MAKE YOUR KAZOO

Step 1:  Cover your cardboard tube with your favorite craft tape. (This step is not necessary to make the kazoo work, just to personalize it).

Step 2: Cut a large square of parchment paper, enough to completely cover one end of the tube.

Step 3: Wrap the end in the parchment paper and secure with a rubber band, tight enough to stay on when blowing into the tube, but not too tight that it creates tension in the paper.

Step 4: Play Your Kazoo!

Note: To make a kazoo work, the parchment paper needs to vibrate. To make this happen, you will need to hum just right. It might take practice, but it can be done!
