IT'S PUMPKIN PICKIN' TIME... PICK A WINNER!

It's Fall at last! Time to pick out pumpkins for "pumpkin spice" everything and jack-o-lanterns!

Of course, the very best place to purchase a pumpkin is after a day of fun at a pick-your-own pumpkin patch!  See our list of local patches HERE.

However, if you can't go to the farm, here are a few tried and true ways to assure that the pumpkin is fresh for the season!

  • A farm stand is your next best bet, as at least the pumpkins were picked nearby and did not have to endure the jostling that might occur during shipment to supermarkets.
  • Look at the pumpkin from all sides before picking it. Make sure that the entire pumpkin is colored bright orange and that there are no bruises, soft spots, or signs of mold.
  • Try to sit the pumpkin upright while it is still on the vine to make sure that it will sit level once you've brought it home.
  • Make sure that the stem stays attached to the pumpkin. A good choice should have dried, somewhat brittle stems that make them easy to pluck from the vine.
  • Always carry your pumpkin by the bottom so as not to risk damage to the stem.
  • Store in a cool, dry place prior to carving/displaying them.
  • If the pumpkin is a heavy one, be sure to lift with your legs, not with your back.
  • Frost is a enemy number 1, so bring them indoors in freezing temps.
  • Be sure to save the seeds to roast. Recipes for 3 delicious treats HERE.
