Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata continues to be one of the most beloved operas of all time. The Atlanta Opera is excited to close the curtain on their 2018-19 season with this new co-production featuring a cast of rising stars, a sumptuous setting, and unforgettable score.
The story of La traviata is as old as love itself. It has been told and retold over and over, in movies (Pretty Woman) and books (Lady of the Camelias) and musicals (Moulin Rouge), but no one tells the story quite like Verdi – with a sumptuous setting and sweeping music. The idea of two people from very different backgrounds and social arenas falling in love and making it last, has captivated audiences through the ages. From the instantly recognizable “Libiamo” to the showpiece aria “Sempre libera," this grand opera tells the story of Violetta, a young and beautiful courtesan falls in love with the equally young and beautiful Alfredo. Love, however, can be deadly to a woman in her position.
“La traviata is a grand story about love and the pressures we put on ourselves to love the “right” person,” said Arthur Fagen, The Carl and Sally Gable Music Director for The Atlanta Opera and conductor for La traviata. “The music is sweeping and romantic, and perfectly captures the action on stage. More than almost anyone, Verdi understood how the combination of the right song and the right singer could move an audience.”
Soprano Zuzana Marková makes her American and Atlanta Opera debut as Violetta, the beautiful courtesan who must grapple with her tragic fate. The Czech-born coloratura soprano specializes in bel canto and performs internationally with leading opera companies around the world.
Tenor Mario Chang, a native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, reprises Alfredo – the deeply romantic young man who only has eyes for Violetta. Chang debuted as Alfredo at Washington National Opera in this co-production and recently completed the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at The Metropolitan Opera and earned an advanced diploma in Opera Studies at The Juilliard School. This is his Atlanta Opera debut.
Argentinian baritone Fabian Veloz makes his Atlanta Opera debut as Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s stoic and old-fashioned father. Since his early critical successes in 2009, Veloz has become one of the most important figures of the Argentina lyric scene, interpreting the main roles of his voice type in Don Pasquale, Carmina Burana, Il Trovatore, Eugene Onegin and other works.
This new co-production with Washington National Opera, The Atlanta Opera, The Glimmerglass Festival, Seattle Opera and Indiana University and created by Washington National Opera artistic director Francesca Zambello, is gorgeously set in Paris at the turn of the century.
The Atlanta Opera presents La traviata on April 27 and 30 and May 3 and 5, 2019 at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Tickets start at $38 and can be purchased at atlantaopera.org or by calling 404-881-8885. The opera will be performed in Italian with English surtitles.
