SHEN YUN REVIEW

By Becky Samford, Publisher Duluth, Norcross, Suwanee, Johns Creek & Peachtree Corners Macaroni Kid April 9, 2019

Seeing Shen Yun has been on my wishlist for several years, so I was thrilled to attend their opening night last Friday at Cobb Energy Center. This year marks Shen Yun's 13th season.

This show is now the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Featuring an 80-member cast of dancers, musicians, singers, emcees, and technical crew, Shen Yun presents classical Chinese culture through dance and music.

My favorite aspect of the show was the gorgeous, hand-made costumes highlighting China’s dynasties, regions, and ethnic groups. Watching the dancers in such vividly colored costumes gracefully glide through their dances reminded me of the changing patterns of a kaleidoscope as it explodes with brilliant colors at each turn. The colors and movements of the long silky "water sleeves" and the beautiful cascading blue fans were especially mesmerizing.

The perfectly synchronized dances were beautiful to watch and featured some amazing acrobatic moves, extremely high leaps and even dancing while balancing heavy porcelain posts on their heads. The movements of the male Mongolian dancers really made it seem as though they were galloping across the Eurasian Steppes on horseback!

Interspersed with the dances were some scenes depicting tales from China's rich heritage and legends. The patented digital projection backdrop brought these stories to life in a surprising and innovative manner. It allowed the dancers to seamlessly travel from the stage to the backdrop and back again, adding dimensions of time and space that were previously impossible to depict.

The live orchestra for the show combines the strings, woodwinds, and brass of the West with several Chinese instruments such as the erhu and pipa to recreate beautiful ancient Chinese melodies. This harmonious blending of east and west was delightful.
