National Day of Service and Remembrance

September 11, 2001 Remembered

By By: Kamlyn Jurgensen, publisher Macaroni Military Family September 8, 2013

September 11, 2001, changed the way Americans felt about our country, our citizens and our first responders. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph "Rudy" Giuliani said, “The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead we have emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic, and religious freedom, the rule of law and respect for human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in freedom.”

On this day, we remember the sacrifices of our first responders who while saving others became victims of this horrible act of terrorism; the heroic efforts and sacrifice of the crew and passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 who thwarted the attack on the Pentagon; and the lives lost to all those at the World Trade Center; and the crews and passengers of American Flights 11 and 77 and United Airlines Flight 175.

September 11 is now known as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. It is a way of honoring and remembering the victims of the 9/11 attacks. You are urged to become involved with your community and serve others during this day. It is "paying it forward" for the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for others during these horrific acts of terrorism.

On this day, there is a moment of silence recognized at 8:46 AM EST. This is the moment the first plane, Flight 11, hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. The American flag should be flown at half-staff in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

If you would like an opportunity to serve your community in remembrance of this day, you can find more information at www.serve.gov.
