CHICAGO sizzles in Atlanta!!

Cobb Energy Center is "turning up the heat" with the Gas South Broadway Series!!

October 8, 2012
I haven't been to Cobb Energy Center in a while, so when my daughter and I attending the opening night of CHICAGO last Thursday night, I was again reminded why I like this venue so much. It is because I didn't have to fight with traffic to get there plus the attached parking deck is so convenient. (And at 8 bucks, so economical...try getting that price to park downtown!) The theatre itself is beautiful, the acoustics are are fabulous, the seats are very comfortable and the view from every seat is great!

CHICAGO was described as "a sensational tale of sin, corruption and all that jazz" and it did not disappoint! The story is a head-line scandal with plenty of unscrupulous characters and unexpected twists. Unlike most Broadway musicals, there were no flashy sets. In fact the stage was bare except for the orchestra, a few chairs and the actors. But those actors filled that stage with so much talent that anything else would have been a distraction. The unbelievably great vocals, the very sexy costumes and high energy dancing were mesmerizing. The house exploded with cheers and applause for Kecia Lewis-Evans' rendition of "When You're Good to Mama"! CHICAGO was filled with characters that made you laugh, scenes that pricked your heart, songs that made your foot tap and dancing that almost made your heart stop! It's no surprise that this was the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. It epitomizes what it means to be a smash hit Broadway musical!

CHICAGO was the first of three smokin' hot Broadway plays that Gas South is bringing to Cobb Energy Center this year. The next show will be West Side Story appearing December 13th through 16th, followed by Sandy Hackett's RAT PACK SHOW March 14-17 which takes the audience on a journey back to visit Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and Dean Martin!

Set in new York City, West Side Story is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with two star-crossed lovers finding themselves caught between the rival street gangs. Instead of the Montagues and the Capulets, the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Anglo Jets are locked in a bitter rivalry. However, this does not stop Tony and Maria, on opposing sides, from falling in love with each other. The music definitely drives this play with timeless love songs such as "Maria", "Somewhere" and "One Hand, One Heart", the fiery Latin music and sizzling dancing of "America", and other iconic musical favorites such as "Tonight", "Jet Song", "I Feel Pretty", and "A Boy Like That".

The original 1957 Broadway hit was nominated for 5 Tony awards and spawned the 1961 movie starring Natalie Wood which won 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture.
