Discover Science Center Science Camps
Sign your kids up for a fun-filled summer at Discover Science Center. Kids will learn about sharks and jellyfish, bioluminescence and camouflage, and even how pirates used science to navigate the seas. Our science camps are enhanced with art and creativity projects to help kids integrate what they have learned during the week.  Space is limited to 12 students per age group (ages 5-8 and 9-12), so register early.

Camp Descriptions

So you want to be a marine biologist?
May 26- May29*
(4-day camp week)

Discover what it is really like to be a marine biologist. We will explore activities related to working in the ocean, from maintaining saltwater tanks to experimenting with buoyancy and learning how to design cool experiments to learning how the ocean works.

An optional Try Scuba Experience at a local dive shop (SeaVentures, 2880 Holcomb Bridge Road, Alpharetta GA 30022) will be available the following weekend for campers (ages 8+) who would like to try scuba diving.

*4-Day Camps will be $170 for Members and $200 for Non-Members for Full Day
Additional cost for Scuba Experience is:
Members: $42.50 Non-Members: $50

Life on a Reef
June 1 – June 5

What is a coral reef? How do you find an octopus? How do sharks hide? Do fish sleep? We will study the different habitats in the ocean and how reef animals interact with each other. Through art, campers will investigate ways marine creatures use camouflage and they will create their own watercolor underwater reef.

Spineless Creatures
June 8 – June 12

We will look into the wonderful world of marine invertebrates. Find out what cnidarians are and why sea cucumbers spit their guts out. We will grow sea monkeys and feed sea anemones. Campers will learn about fractal forms and find them in nature.

Sea Turtles and Marine Mammals
June 15 – June 19

Everyone loves sea turtles and marine mammals. This week learn more about who they are and how they live. We will learn to identify different types of turtles and study the nesting patterns of sea turtles in Georgia. Campers will see what it takes to be a dolphin trainer, and create stories about a baby sea turtle’s journey through the ocean.

Grossology
June 22- June 26

Campers will learn the science behind things we think are gross. We will learn what makes up blood and what scabs are, how germs are spread, how snot helps keep us healthy, and why dung beetles like dung. We will have lots of gross science and art activities to teach campers about physiology and nature in a fun way.

Hiding in Plain Sight
June 29- July 2*
(4-day camp week)

Some animals look like they glow in the dark, while others cannot be seen at all. Learn about bioluminescence, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and how some reef creatures hide in plain sight. We will do an experiment with bioluminescent microbes from a glowing squid, and campers will discover the art of camouflage using optical illusions, textures and patterns.

Go Fish!!
July 6 – 10

Let’s learn our marine fish. What does a frogfish look like? What about a batfish? Where does a pearlfish live? We will learn about beautiful reef fish, odd-shaped bottom dwelling fish, and the world’s ugliest fish – the blobfish. Campers will also create a new fish from recycled “junk” and tell their story of where and how they live. We might even try our hand at Gyotaku, the Japanese art of using fish to make painted prints.

Shark Week
July 13-17

Of course we have to have a Shark Week!!! Learn even more about sharks, parts of their anatomy, how they swim, and where they live and then we will track their migration patterns. Campers will create an investigative report on their favorite shark and learn to draw different shark species. We will create shark tooth jewelry and shark skin, too.

STE(A)M Camp
July 20-24

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math all in one week. Campers will have an exciting week learning about electrical circuits and how motors work, practicing their computer coding skills, and using math in Minecraft to solve engineering problems and create cool pieces of art.

Pirate Science
July 27-31

Pirates had it hard with scurvy, shipworms, and not having a GPS handy. Learn about the science pirates used to sail the seven seas, and find out that shipworms are not really worms at all! (So what are they?) We will make and read treasure maps, build catapults, and use buoyancy principles to try to sink our enemy’s ships.

Fish Guts
August 3-7

Take a look at a jellyfish, sea star, squid, and crayfish from the inside out. We will dissect different aquatic organisms and see how they are the same and different. Campers that don’t want to dissect the critters can just watch if they want. We will creatively use sea sponges, shells, and “squid ink” to create our own art masterpieces.

Preschool Camp
Ages 4-5
9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Cost: $100 members; $115 Non-members

Creature Creations
August 10-13

We will learn about marine animals while creating marine art creatures. The animals will come to life through projects that foster creative expression.

The Seaside and Me!
August 17-20

Do you know how sand is made? We will explorer the mysteries of the beach and the aquatic ecosystems that exist.

1 Fish, 2 Fish...
August 24-27

What is the ugliest fish – the blob fish! We will learn about all types of marine fish and of course – sharks. We will explore where they live and the how they survive in the ocean.
