HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS REVIEW

By Becky Samford, MK Publisher, Duluth, Norcross, Johns Creek & Peachtree Corners March 16, 2014
Last night, the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters performed at the Gwinnett  Arena on their "Fans Rule" Tour. If you are like me and have only seen them on TV, l assure you that it doesn't hold a candle to seeing them live!

Don't be late!! First, you will miss the great pre-show performance with lots of music and a dance competition. But secondly, they WILL stop the show to call you out!! Thank goodness, we were on time!!

For the second year in a row, fans got the chance to vote on the new rules used the games. Last night, the first quarter rule was the Trick Shot Challenge where each team challenges the other to make trick shots. If you make the shot, you get 5 points, but if you miss, the 5 points go to the other team.  Challenges includes such tricks as "do a cartwheel over the ball and then slam duck it" or "spin the ball on your finger, pass it between your legs then bounce it off your head into the basket"! These tricks demonstrated what amazing basketball skills these players really have.

The second quarter rule was Make or Miss where each team starts with just 2 players. When a team scores, an additional teammate may enter the court.  When they miss, a teammate must leave the court.

The Harlem Globetrotters are Ambassadors of Goodwill.  They took advantage of half-time to bring several schools, Boy Scout troops and other community service groups onto the court for recognition.

Hot Hand Jersey, the 3rd quater rule states that the team player wearing the hot orange jersey gets double points each time he scores.  It was nip and tuck through the 3rd quarter, with the GTs barely holding on to their lead. But when the fans voted in the Trick Shots Challenge again for the 4th quarter rule, the Globetrotters pulled ahead to a 102 to 93 victory!!

One of 5 year old Johnny's favorite parts was that while the game was going on, the "captain", Big Easy, was "miked up" so we all heard everything he said.  He was yelling at the other team and talking to his teammates, while his side-kick, "Scooter" kept yelling "That's right, that's right!" to everything he said. It was hilarious! Johnny also loved it when they yanked someone's shorts down to reveal red glittery Elmo boxers!!

Katie, who was less than excited about attending a basketball game, loved the wild chase involving Scooter, Big Easy, a cup of water and several people from the audience being carried around as shields. By the end of the night she was screaming how much she LOVED the show and wants to go again!

But the whole family agreed that our favorite part was the slow motion replay. They actually stopped the play, reversed and retraced their steps backwards, then replayed it again in slow motion. It was truly awesome!!

What an exciting show!! My niece dubbed the game "delightfully dribbilicous"!!  The Harlem Globetrotters are not only amazingly talented athletes, they are fantastic entertainers as well!! From the "get up and dance" music, to the interaction with the audience and the fantastic tricks they performed, it was non stop fun all night.

It's not surprising that they have been thrilling families for 88 years! Filled with good old fashion horseplay, hilarious jokes and unbelievable basketball skills, this show is just wholesome, family entertainment at it's finest for everyone... young, old, boys, girls, basketball fans or not. I'm still humming "Sweet Georgia Brown"! My family's recommendation is to RUN and purchase tickets to the next available show!! You will LOVE it!

Disclosure: My family received complimentary tickets to the show in return for posting this review, however the opinions are my own.
