You know the story: A young boy named Charlie finds a "golden ticket" admitting him into Willy Wonka's top-secret chocolate factory where he encounters chocolate rivers, inflating blueberries, magic elevators and other delights.
The Golden Ticket is a poignant tale about wishes coming true.
Well, it's also a comic opera based on Charlie & the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl which will debut at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on March 3, 6, 9 and 11.
This Atlanta Opera production will be the third production of The Golden Ticket since it premiered in June 2010 at Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Many singers from the original St. Louis cast will reprise their roles in Atlanta including bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch as Willy Wonka/Mr. Know, tenor Andrew Drost as Augustus Gloop, and baritone David Kravitz as Lord Salt.
Composer Peter Ash has fashioned a fully orchestrated, contemporary opera that is melodic and exciting, meant to entertain both young and more mature audiences.
Most of the roles in the opera, including the children, are written for adults. The only exception is the title role of Charlie, which is written for a boy soprano.
The Golden Ticket is appropriate for children aged 7-18. Younger children who are particular fans of music and theater or mature for their ages may also find this opera enjoyable.

The show runs approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes with one 15-minute intermission.
Did you know that the Atlanta Opera offers a Pre-Opera Talk beginning one hour prior to the performance to introduce ticket holders to the opera they are about to experience. This is recommended for first-timers!
