DINOSAURS ALIVE! NOW SHOWING AT FERNBANK MUSEUM'S IMAX THEATRE

If you have a budding paleontologist in your home, the new IMAX film, Dinosaurs Alive! should be tops on your list to see! Five-story-tall dinosaurs roar onto Fernbank Museum's giant screen for a captivating adventure of science and discovery. See the earliest creatures of the Triassic Period to the monsters of the Cretaceous in a "life-sized" IMAX® presentation.

The film features fascinating original clips of the daring 1920s expeditions to the Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia led by archaeologist, Roy Chapman Andrews, who was said to be the inspiration for Indiana Jones. The modern aerial photography of this area is breath-taking as we transition to current paleontologists following in his footsteps in both Mongolia and also at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.

We join these paleontologists as they discover new fossils which are changing the way we look at dinosaurs. Some of their evidence suggests that instead of Velociraptors' hide being a pebbly reptilian like substance, they were instead heavily feathered like modern day birds.  Computer Generated Animation of how dinosaurs might have looked and moved brings them back to life…in a big way!

We met Tarbosaurus (a close relative to T. rex), Velociraptors, Protoceratops, Seismosaurus and witnessed dinosaurs locked in combat, nesting in colonies, protecting their young, and facing catastrophic forces of nature. We also learned which dinosaurs traveled in herds, which made nests, which were predators, and which were prey.

While there have been great discoveries over the last century and more is known about these amazing creatures than ever before, the scientific quest to find and understand dinosaurs and the world they inhabited is ongoing. Dinosaurs Alive! estimates less than two percent of all the dinosaur species that once lived have been discovered. For young paleontologists, the adventure is just beginning, and Dinosaurs Alive! is sure to spark imaginings of what mysteries still lie buried beneath our feet.

Johnny and I were the guests of the museum for the media preview of Dinosaurs Alive! earlier this week. Johnny is seven years old and overall he enjoyed it a lot. However, because a few of the dinosaur fight scenes were very loud and a little scary for him and the fact that this is more of a documentary than a movie, I would definitely not recommend this film for anyone younger than 7.
