Sugarloaf Ballet

Presents

Hansel & Gretel

Sugarloaf Ballet opens its 2015-2016 season with the new original ballet, Hansel & Gretel. Based on the German fairytale and Humperdinck’s Opera, more than 70 young dancers from Gwinnett and Forsyth counties join on stage to present Lori Zamzow-Wire’s original telling of this magnificent children’s tale.

Lost in the forest and stomachs growling, Hansel and Gretel stumble upon a house made of delicious sweets, and they are welcomed by a witch with sinister motives. Filled with scenes of dancing gumdrops, chocolate bonbons, lemon drops, peppermints, and gingerbread cookies, Hansel and Gretel find themselves in a place of wonder. However, upon discovery of the witch’s evil intentions, Hansel and Gretel fight to defeat the witch and return once more to their loving parents.

Artistic Director, Lori Zamzow-Wire, states, “Hansel & Gretel is a beautiful story of hope and bravery, overcoming difficulties, and finding hope inside oneself.” Audiences will be inspired by the highly recognizable, classical score and captivating performances.

Professional dancer, Nick Haglin, in the role of “Father” will once more join Sugarloaf Ballet as a guest artist. He will accompany Abbey Jane Davis (11th, Greater Atlanta Christian School), “Mother”, and dance a compassionate pas de duex while in search of their lost children. Jada Bourgeois (10th, Georgia Connections Academy) as “Dew Fairy”, will enchant audiences with a variation symbolizing hope. The sinister “Witch”, Alex Archer (12th, Collins Hill High School), will have all her malevolent motives on display. “Hansel” and “Gretel”, performed by Caleb Wire (6th, Creekland Middle School) and Ava Hager (8th, Osborne Middle School) will lead the audience on their journey through this classic tale. Sugarloaf Ballet Company members as elite athletes taking six or more hours of dance each week, will round out the supporting roles and corps de ballet, showing the intensive requirement it takes to be a part of Sugarloaf Ballet Company

In a truly inspiring tale great for children of all ages, Sugarloaf Ballet has outdone its self with spectacular new set designs, special effects, and gorgeous handmade costumes.
