UGA SUMMER ACADEMY ROBOTICS CAMP:
Using the OLLO Inventor system from Robotics, Inc., you’ll learn about the programming of microcontrollers and interfacing of sensors (sound, near-infrared light and touch), the actuation of servo motors and LEDs, and also about wireless (ZigBee) computer communications and control concepts. Through a series of projects, you’ll also be introduced to selected robotics design concepts such as mechanical components (plates, brackets, linkages, fasteners, cables and pulleys), mechanical gear-reduction system for electric motors, and conversion of rotational circular motion to a “walking”, “hopping” or “crawling” motion using 4-bar linkages.
Open to students ages 11-14. July 16-20; 8:30am-3:30pm.

UGA SUMMER ACADEMY FASHION DESIGN SCHOOL:
Learn what it takes to become a fashion designer! You'll discover the basic elements of fashion sketching, illustration, construction, collection development, bead work and fabric selection. We'll examine work by famous designers, from Coco Chanel to Marc Jacobs, and dive into the exciting world of fashion shows by learning the steps a designer goes through before, during and after Fashion Week. We'll even take a field trip to a design studio in Atlanta, where you'll meet designers and see them in action! Students will leave the program with a sketchbook full of designs and inspiration, their own set of design tools, and a final 2D or 3D project. No sewing is done in this course. Open to students ages 13-17. July 9-13; 8:30am-3:30pm

Lionheart Theatre Drama Camps offer programs that are creative and fun!
Campers ages 4-7 can choose Favorite Stories Camp where they will act out favorite well-known stories like the 3 Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood or Patriotic Fun Camp where they will get ready for July 4th with patriotic songs and skits.

Older kids, ages 7-12, can choose Back to Oz, where campers perform scenes and songs from The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz and Wicked or Born in the USA Camp where they will perform scenes and songs from patriotic shows such as 1776, Yankee Doodle Dandy, On the Town and Apollo 13.

PO the gentle giant

This precious boy is named PO.  Po is a Great Pyrennes mix who is between 1-2 years old.  He is like a large panda teddy bear  – so fluffy and wonderful – and just adores being petted and receiving attention from his family.

Easy Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread

Here is a moist bread recipe to use up all your garden zucchini, and the kids won't even know!

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 2 cups grated zucchini
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup walnuts or pecans, optional

 

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350. Spray 2 loaf ...

Bring your found “things”-- feathers, unknown plants, insects, wasp nests, snake skins, millipedes, leaves, unusual fruits, spiders, shells, or other unidentified objects to ENWYC. Function Based Interventions for Solving Problem Behaviors: In this presentation, Shilpa Kooken will focus on the use of functional behavior assessments to derive and implement appropriate strategies. These function-based strategies will allow parents to increase the likelihood of problem behaviors being reduced. This presentation will teach parents each step required to achieve problem behavior reduction. Parents will be taught to determine and prioritize the behaviors, and once the behaviors have been prioritized, tools for determining the function of the behavior will be taught. This will allow the parent to utilize proactive and reactive strategies with which they will be able to reduce the problem behaviors.

Sunday, May 13 - Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra Final Season Performance

The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO), led by Staff Conductor and Youth Orchestra Music Director Jere Flint, will perform its Finale Concert.  This concert, which is the final performance in the Youth Orchestra’s 2011-12 season, will feature two student musicians: flutist Hally Davidson performing Hüe’s Fantasie for Flute and Orchestra and violinist Keanu Mitanga performing the First Movement of Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto No. 3. Family favorites The Imagination Movers are bringing their Rock-O-Matic tour to Atlanta!  The tour showcases live music, favorite songs and enough energy to ignite every kid’s imagination. The Rock-O-Matic tour stars Rich Collins, Scott Durbin, Dave Poche, and Scott “Smitty” Smith, who will be playing their favorite songs from the Disney Junior TV series. And they will debut new material from their brand-new “Rock-O-Matic” CD/DVD.
